PATRICIA A. MURPHY is a founding member of Murphy, James, Brown & Brown, LLC. Ms. Murphy handles a wide variety of civil litigation matters and represents clients in the Trusts & Estates practice area. Most of Ms. Murphy’s clients have been referred to her by satisfied clients or by other professionals and attorneys. Patricia takes the time with each client to listen to their legal needs and gives them the individualized attention, advice and guidance they require.

In the litigation area, Ms. Murphy has successfully represented clients over the course of more than four decades in civil cases involving commercial, class action, personal injury and property damage matters. These cases have involved a variety of claims, including products liability, construction, brain injury, foster care, commercial disputes and a variety of other cases in the civil arena. She has represented corporate, individual and not-for-profit organizations and has litigated and tried cases in federal and state courts in New York and New Jersey.

In the Trusts & Estates area, Ms. Murphy handles estate litigation matters as well as estate planning for individuals, estate and trust administration, planned giving for charitable organizations and estate tax returns. She previously served as a New York Part 36 attorney, court appointed guardian, court evaluator and attorney for an alleged incapacitated person.

Patricia works with clients and their team of expert advisors, where necessary, to achieve the client’s estate planning goals to assure a smooth transition of assets between generations while minimizing taxes and protecting their legacies.

Ms. Murphy is admitted to the bar for the states of New York and New Jersey. She is also admitted to United States District Court for the Southern and Eastern Districts of New York, the United States District Court of New Jersey, and United States Court of Appeals for Second Circuit.

Patricia has a long history of service in her community. Among other volunteer activities, she served as a board member and past president of the Rockland County Estate Planning Council, an officer on the Board of Trustees of Renew International, a member of the New York State Bar Association and the Professional Ski Instructors of America. She is also a past president of the Upper Ridgewood Tennis Club and former member of the Planned Giving Council for the Archdiocese of Newark.

Ms. Murphy was graduated magna cum laude from Boston College with Bachelor of Arts degrees in Slavic Studies and Political Science. Boston College awarded her the  distinction of “Order of the Cross and Crown” and “Scholar of the College” for her thesis entitled “Ethnicity Under Authoritarian Regimes: A Comparative Study of the Ukraine and Catalonia.” She also attended the Ukrainian Research Institute at Harvard University. In 1983, she received her Juris Doctor degree from St. John’s University School of Law.

Ms. Murphy resides in Bergen County with her husband. She enjoys tennis, platform tennis, golf, skiing, gardening, and spending time with her children and grandchildren.
